Obolonsky District Court of Kyiv at a meeting on August 17 satisfied the request submitted by the public defender of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, Vitaliy Meshechek, on his self-challenge in the case of high treason of the former president and decided to appoint a new public defender.
The presiding judge Vladyslav Deviatko said the court considered the reasoning of Meshechek in his request for self-challenge to be justified. In particular, explaining his decision to the prosecution, the judge said that no one has the right to oblige the defender to carry out his duties, an Interfax-Ukraine correspondent reported.
In its decision, the court instructed the Regional Center for Provision of Secondary Free Legal Assistance in the City of Kyiv to appoint a public defender to the accused Viktor Yanukovych in an urgent order and oblige him to arrive in advance to the Obolonsky Court to study the materials of the case.
The next meeting is scheduled for 10:00 (Kyiv time), September 6.
