On November 21, Ukraine celebrates Day of Dignity and Liberty.
This day brings together two fateful events of the modern history of Ukraine - the 2004 Orange Revolution and the 2013 Dignity Revolution.
According to the Decree of the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko No. 872/2014 of November 13, 2014, the holiday was initiated "with the aim of establishing the ideals of freedom and democracy in Ukraine, preserving and conveying to future generations of objective information about the fateful events in Ukraine of the beginning of the XXI century , as well as giving due respect to the patriotism and courage of the citizens who, in the autumn of 2004 and in November of 2013 to February 2014, stood in defense of democratic values, human and civil rights and freedoms, the national interests of our state and its European choice ".
On November 22, 2004, the Orange Revolution in Ukraine began, national protests, rallies and other actions of civil disobedience. The impetus for these events was the announcement by the Central Election Commission of the results of the second round of the presidential election, according to which Viktor Yanukovych outstripped Viktor Yushchenko. Ukrainians first came to the Maidan to demand re-electio and achieved it.
A year later, in November 2005, Viktor Yushchenko established a new holiday - the Liberty Day.
The next president of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych canceled the Liberty Day and united it with the Unification Day by his decree of December 30, 2011.
In November 2013, Ukrainians again returned to the Maidan. Four years ago, on the evening of November 21, people began gathering on the Independence Square, soon there were 1500 people, and on November 24 - more than 100 thousand supporters of European integration.
