"The House of Representatives of the U.S. Congress has submitted a draft resolution dated to the 85th anniversary of the Famine-Genocide of 1932-1933 (Holodomor) in Ukraine," the embassy said in a statement posted on its Facebook page and Twitter on November 8.
The authors of the draft resolution say that "the 85th anniversary of the Holodomor-Genocide of 1932-1933 should serve as a reminder of the repressive Soviet policy against the people of Ukraine." The House of Representatives expressed its deepest condolences to the survivors of the Holodomor and their families, and called for the dissemination of information to raise awareness in the world about the artificial nature of this tragedy.
They noted that the draft resolution is an important step for Ukraine's efforts and the activities of the Ukrainian Embassy in the United States aimed at the recognition of the Holodomor as an act of genocide against the Ukrainian people and its proper international legal assessment.
The document was co-authored by co-chairs of the Congressional Ukrainian Caucus, Democratic Congressmen Sander Levin (Michigan) and Marcy Kaptur (Ohio) and Republican Congressmen Brian Fitzpatrick (Pennsylvania) and Andy Harris (Maryland).
